Cheerup Store / Broadford. No potters stamp. (Victoria). Demijohn. Impressed. Two tone, tan top, off white body. Impressed. 1 Quart. 204 mm. 1915-1923
Excellent. (8.1). Newnham's Cheerup Stores were advertised from 1915 to 1923 in Broadford. Lip is fine, maybe a spot or two of very fine wear to inner lip edge. Handle is fine with no damage. 14 x 7 mm flat flake under the left rear base edge and a 3 x 3 mm flake further to rear from this also under the heel are quite possibly potters pulls from making, regardless, they are minor. Has a creamy look to the glaze, this darker colour is probably the way it was made. Some patches of hard crud which will clean off. Black speckles to front right including lip, these are heaviest around the shoulder region. Not sure what this is, it has a rough feel. It is not nicks into the glaze, more a black speckled substance on the surface. This is well stuck, I tried scraping a spot or two off, one did come off, but the other wouldn't, it may even be from making? It doesn't detract at all though as it is not damage. A few scratches and minor marks. A wonderful example of an extremely rare demijohn from this country Victorian town, and in the very sought after quart size. This is the first we have ever seen for sale, a once in a lifetime opportunity. Estimate: $1500-2000
