INRI Jesus Christ Crucifix with Skull and Crossbones, 142 mm.. Miscellaneous. Religious. 142 mm crucifix with Jesus Christ and Skull and Crossbones. 142 mm. 20th century
Very Good. (N/A). Both the INRI and the skull and crossbones are related to Jesus Christ. INRI is an abbreviation for the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, meaning “Jesus the Nazorean, King of the Jews.” In sentencing our Lord to death, Pontius Pilate had this inscription written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek placed on the Cross above his head. The skull and the crossbones has a dual significance. First, Jesus was crucified just outside the old city of Jerusalem at Golgotha, meaning “Skull Place” in Hebrew. Secondly, an ancient tradition relates that this spot was also where Adam was buried, hence the depiction of both the skull and crossbones. Don't know how old this is? It looks brass in the main parts, there are black inlaid sections of unknown material. This crucifix is a bit grimy and discoloured with some scratches and so forth. Very interesting item.
