L. R & Co. No base mark. Fruit, leaves and vines around the bottle. (United Kingdom) (Late Kingsley Durdin Collection). Goldfields. Cordial. Applied top. Long neck with bulge in middle, tapered indented panels down from this to the bottom of the shoulder. Vines, leaves and fruite ambossed around the cylindrical bottle. Aqua. 26 oz. 343 mm. 1860s
Very Good. (7.5). A bit hazy, this has been oiled internally. Capsule remains around the outer lip. Couple of little fisheyes to lower neck. A bit of dull wear in places. Bubble to upper label space has a small open part which has let dirt in. Little scrape to base edge on label space side, around from this is a tiny flake. Some scratches and scuffs. Some shiny patches as well. An amazing bottle! Lauchlan Rose (1829–1885), a ship chandler in Leith, began a process for preserving lime juice in 1865 and patented this method to preserve citrus juice without alcohol in 1867. This must be the very first bottle that he used, reminiscent of the goldfields Thin's vinegars and so forth. We have never seen one of these before, don't miss this opportunity to add a superb rarity to your collection. This is from the late Kingsley Durdin collection. Estimate: $1000-1500
