S. A. G. I / Brewed / Ginger Beer. Potters stamp: Bourne / 11 / Denby. (South African Garrison Institutes, Pretoria). Ginger Beer. Cork Stoppered. Two tone, tan top, off white body. Black print. Dump. 10 oz. 165 mm. 1900s
Near Mint. (9.1). This is possibly a Pretoria bottle, but ginger beer was sold at military canteens around South Africa. S.A.G.I. refers to the South African Garrison Institutes (1900-1915) which were established as a unified canteen system for the armed forces by Lord Roberts, commander-in-chief of the British forces in South Africa during the Anglo Boer war. Tiny nick or two and a fine scratch or two, but pretty much as made. Wonderful example, and great item with the military links. GB number 380 from E. Lastovica's South African Ginger Beer book Estimate: $100-150
